Pulling Together Minnesota Campaign

It’s not surprising that our communities have a big effect on our health.

Yet when asked what it takes to be healthy, people rarely mention the places where they live, work and play.

Our latest campaign, Pulling Together Minnesota, is about creating healthier communities. It’s about neighborhoods where it’s pleasant for people of all ages to be active and everyone has access to affordable healthy food. It’s about making healthy options available to all, and making Minnesota a place where people live long and healthy lives.

Ask your neighbors or co-workers what they're doing to get or stay healthy. They might tell you how they hit the gym, or skip dessert, or even struggle with motivation. But being healthy is about more than willpower. It’s about working together to create communities where it’s possible for everyone to be as healthy as they can be, and diseases are prevented before they occur.

Together we have the power to expand the conversation about health, to think about how our communities shape our health and to make healthy options available to all Minnesotans every day. That’s why the Center for Prevention is inviting Minnesotans to pull together for healthy communities.

How do we do this?

Working together, Minnesotans can create healthy places to live, work and play. Community gardens and farmers markets make it easier to find affordable, healthy food. Neighborhood and school connections can make it safer to walk and bike to school. Tobacco-free neighborhoods make it possible for adults and kids to breathe smoke-free air, discourage kids from starting to smoke and encourage adults to quit tobacco.

Many of the diseases that kill more than 20,000 Minnesotans each year could be prevented if healthy eating, regular physical activity and quitting tobacco were the norm in our state.

Healthy communities are an important part of the solution. That’s why we’re investing proceeds from Blue Cross’ settlement with the tobacco industry in community health improvement.

The opportunities to create healthier surroundings are as varied as the communities where we live, work and play. It starts with pulling together to create a healthier state. What are you pulling for?
